LOXDON, Marcli 31. A protest agamst the saiaries paitl to those who lioid Ifegli posts in nationalised industries was made at a eonference of the Shop, Distributive, and AlJied Workcrs' Union, whieh adopted a resolution instnicting its exeeutive to uxge the Governrnent to put a £200U limit on future appointments. A co-operative speaker, klr. W. A. Giles, said that the saiaries offored iu trade union officials as chairmen ot uational boards were fabulous. "We see our own colleagues going to jobs at £8000 a year, while we, as branch officials, have to talk to our meuibcrs about freezing wages, " he said. ' ' Before long Billv Burrows may be offered a £10,000-a-year job. "W'e don't want to lose him. " Mr. Burrows succeeded, as generai secretary of the union, 8ir Joseph Ilallsworth, who is now a £o000-a-year lucmber of the Coal Board. For inatance, Lord Citriue (formcrly receiving £1250 a vear. as the T.U.C. generai secretary), now gets £8500 a year as chairman of the Britisli Eiectrical Autliority. -Sir Ben Smith, who was on £850 a year as organiser of the Transport Workcrs' Union, now gets an estimated £3500 as chairman of tlie West Midland Uoal Board. Bir F-rederick Burrows, who was tlie unpaid railwaynien 's president, becau|e the Goveruor of Bengal at £0000, and is UOW/ chairman ot' tlie Agri-' eultural Coinmission at £1500. Mr. Edwards, who was the, miners' genciial .secretary. at £1000, is a member of tlie Coal Board at £5000. Mr. Jack Benstead, £1200 railwavmen 's generai secretary, is getting £5000 as a member of the Transport Commission. Mr. Harold Clav, at £1000 as assistant g^ncral secretary of tlie transport workcrs, gets £3500 as a member of Ihe lload Transport Exeeutive. Mr. E. W. Bussev, who was getting £1200 as generai secretary of tlie Electrical Trades Union, is on £3500 as a member of the Britisli Electrical Autliority.
