Thc aniniar conference of the Hhop Distributive and Allied Workers' Union at Blackpool endorsed the cxoeutivc's action in opposing Government frcezing of wage claims and dccided to deinand a rise of £1 a vveek for all members of the union and an increase of £1 5s in their minmum wage. , ' The aiting general secretarv, Mr. A". W. Burrows, said no man to-dav could maintain himself and his family in any part of Britain on less than £5 a week, and yet many memtjers of the union were still receiving oniv a little over £4. On a card vote the conference rejected a resolution protesting against. the Government 's purge of Communists in the Civil >Service. The annual conference of co-opera-tive societies, which also dccided to support Government action against Communists, supported a resolution approving the present rate of release of men from the ai'med. forces and refused a proposal that o the conference should urge speedier releases. The Minister of Defence, Mr. A. V. Alexander, who'attended the conference,' said: "We sliould be failing in our duty if we did not take all reasonable steps to safeguard our secnrifcy'" The conference unanmiously approved a rcasiution ealling for scaling down in the .Royal Family 's allowances.
