Householders Still Hunting The Elusive Candle
Winter blackouts caused a, plienonienal' demand on fcandles last year putting" considerable strain on New Zealand's two candie factories, which were already hampered by shortage of ingredients though some relief was giyen by the importation of suppnes from Australia. A review of the position today reveals that candles will not be available in the shaps . in any quantity. A Levin retailer said that many people were giuttonous in their demand for eandles, buying them by the packet from Various sourqes. What they did not realise. -he said, was that a , eandle's life was not brought ' into consideratiqn. The duration of power cuts werb sa short that, providing it was not burnt unnecessarily, a eandle would last a considerable period. How some people thought -they would require three" or fqxif packets was beyond his understanding. If the public would take thig aspect into consideration and ' think of others, he felt sure that' there would be •sufflcient candles available to see Levin householders through the blackout period. .
