Many Contestants for New Rugby Commitee

There was, no laek of .contestants for the nme seats on the management committee ,of the Horowhenua Rugby Union when the annual election took place in Levin last night. Nineteen namss were put forward by clubs, one of which nominated four of its members. The past president, Mr. A. Gillespie was re-elected unopposed wlhle the eieetion of Mr. T,- Wini-. -ata to the pQsition of y.ice-president reduced'the number of contestanfc for the comniittee -to 13. *• v v • '■ A large gathering of cinb jnembers- and jnterested persons was present in addition to the offieial delegates from. the various clubs. All took a.fiye'ly interest in the proceedings and put forward many suggestions for the ■ betterment - of Rugby" in the •Horowhenua. The following are the officer-s for the year:--Patron: Mr. F. S. Corbishley and Walker, (subjeot to consent) ; hon. solicitors.; M6ssrs, Blenkhorn and Todd; delegates to the' N-Z-R.IJ.: Messrs. A. Giiiespie and T. Winiata; insuranfce aceount trustees: Messrs. F. The electioii of selectors for senio'r :and junior teams will be made at the first meeting' of the •.new committee next Tuesday. The appointment of r.epfesentativ.es o'n the committee from the Referees' Association and Prjmary Schools has yet to be made. During the general discussiion mention was made by the president of the Foxton Bo-rough Co.uncil's decision to - demand 20' per cent, of the gate takings at matches played •on its grounds. AU the other horough councils h'ad agreed to the past arrangement of 10 per ceni, said Mr. Giiiespie. After some d-is-cussion it was decided that a recommendation b.e made to the inooming -.committee that it arrange fcy a deputation to meet the Foxton council and see if a -.ehange of atfitude could not be brought about. . . . „ Further recommendations to the incoming" committee were that a new. rule book be pripted, it being poihted "nut" that the present one was printed in 1940 and there had been many 'changes to the rules, that coaches be appointed to representative teams and that more notiee be given of selected representatives so as to allow more pfactiees before the day of the match. , .It was alsp put forward : as a r.ecommendation that season tickets be issued to all players, .and that -the gate charges for the public be increased to Is 6d, this being considered neeessary in view pf the increasing ,cost of arranging representative. games. The date. of the commencement of this season's games was also- discuSsed, but it was decided that in view pf the present condition of the grounds the fixing of a date should . be left to the management committee. The majority of clubs, however, made individual requests for the playing of friendiy games immediately.
