Scout Lay Members In Conference
. - " . TIMARU, March 14. " " The first cohference of Sohth Island Bcout lay members opened at Timaru' on .Friday and coneluded today (Sunday). Sixty representatives from all parts of the South Island attended under the - chairmanship of Mr, J. C. Bentley (Timaru). The chairmen of sessions were Messrs __Hector Christie (Wellington), J. Tapper (Southland), W. J. Wesney (Western Southland) and A. J. Seott (Christchurch). Dominion headquarters were represented ' ,by Messrs Seddon Hills and D. A. Dale (Wellington) and Canterbury by _ Sir Joseph Ward. The purpose of the conference was to stimulate the liaison between lay members and the movement and bring about a better appreciation of the responsibilities of citizenship. Many remits were carried, ineluding Christchurch suggestibn that the question of obtaining Scout leaders be given precedence over all other administrative work in seouting this year./.The cqnference, in reply to a message of goodwill, sent a telegram to the GQyernof-Geheral (Sir Bernard Freyberg) expressing appreciation of his interest, and a further telegrain to Lady Baaen-Po.well acknowledging her help and inspiration to , the movement at all ti-mes.
