BIG MARCHING DISPLAY

Arrangements are almost complete for the pre-North Island Marching championships on tne Levin Park Domain tomorrow. This will be a milestone in the history of LeVin, as the visitihg competitors. •nurober one-sixth of the- town's •population. The peaceful scene .■usually to be. found in Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon will certainly not pertain this- week--end. Apart from the ' competitors, it is expected that supporters and visitors will number at - least another 300 or 400. The grand display of colour as the gaily-.c'oloured uniforms intermingle in the serpentine march will be one of the sights that will not' be forgotten for some time, * • Acceding to the request sof the large farming community in the Horowhenua, the association has decided to stage the serpentine march at 3 p.m. The Wellington Centre's cham-" pion team, Rebels, will be aniong the competitors, while D.I.C. (Wanganui) , who came third in the N.Z. championship at Dunedin, will also be taking part.- During the afternoon a'juvenile competition will also be conducted for the Benfell Oup, donated by Mr. and Mrs. W. Benfell, of Levin, and'-it will be interesting to see , these marching anidgets under the judges' y.es, as all are under ,12 years- of age.* The association is determined to hold- its record' -.established ' last year- of » being the -orily association to put -through 30 teams; in three hours. With six- more this yearl if is expected that the contest will' be finalised 'by • 5 p.m. Hfrotvheiiua Bands have eome to the assistance of . the ■ association en 'bloc, for as well as the Foxton and Levin Silver, the Otaki Band will also be present, the three bands combining to provide the music for the serpentine vmarch. *
