NI. "A" Grade Softball Championships

Playing at Auckland, the Horowhenua softball representatives though lacking the . experience of the other teams, played good softball, and although losing four out of five games never laeked ih sportsmanship throughout the tournament. This was the first occasion Horowhenua. has sent representatives to the womeifis national championships, and for a team that comprised mostly junior players it put up a fine display. One of the players, Irene Cootes, had the hronour of playing in the New Zealand team. Another player, B. Batten, was selected for "The Rest" team. The N.Z. team beat "The Rest" 9—2. In t,he first game of the tournament Horowhenua met South Auckland,- and feeling the effects of their long train journey, did well to keep the score down to 25 — 8. The same afternoon they played Auckland, who were runners-up in the ^championship, and although beaten the game was ' close, the. score being 8 — 1.

On Friday the games played were against Wellington, winners of the championships, the match being lost 22 — 5, and against Wanganui, which was also* lost 23—7. Saturday saw a definite improvement in the team. All the players had gained cohfidence and more experience from their . previous, games, and they defeated the' strong Hutt Valley team 8—7 in a close game. . -
