Unfrocked Priest Escapes From Vatican
HOME, March 6. A reliable Vatican source has revealed that Monsignor C'ippieo, who was unfrocked for " f alsificatioiis and swindles" escaped from the Vatican by tricking his policeman "gaoler". Cippico asked the policenian guarding him to tnove some books from one room to another, tlien as the policeman entered with his arms full of books Cippico steppcd out, swung the door to, Ioelted the policeman in and walked away. A large limousine was reported to have waited for him when' he fled from the Vatican apartments where he was detained: The journal Osservatore Romano says police headquarters think foreign powers might have been interested in the eseape. The Associated Press eorrespondent says the Italian police report that .they have been investigating for months the disappearance from Cippico 's' apartment of jewels worth £30,000 which relatives left in his keeping- during the German occupation. Cippico was detained in the Tower of the Winds which is a building near St« Peter 's.
