CHRISTCHURCH, March 5. Canterbury batted brightly on tlie first day of the match against tlie Fijians and t'h'e innings was declared at 421 for nine wickets. The day's crieket was full of incident. and was as remarkable for the number of chances tne Fijians misesd as for the quick scqring of the Canterbury batsmen. The visiting team had little luck, however. On many occasions the ball fell just our of reach and although most of tiie home batsmen. gave attractive displays, the total was a little flattermg. The best innings was that of W. ix. Hadlee, ,the ^.anter.bury ,c^ptain, ?wno; scored 102 in unde'r two hours. A. Ii..
