Hovyever, the troops were instrueted to keep awav from the border to avoid possible claslies with the British Mai'ines. The Government stated the aetion was taken merely to protect the Guatemalan towns and population .in the event of trespfissing by the British and that it was not considered nece.ssary to declare a general mobilisation at present. Officials in Beli'ze deseribed as false fi report that 1500- British ti jps had taken up positions on the border. They said 110 British troops were stationednear the frontier. Presideut Juan J-ose Arevalo broadcast -an appeal- for all Guatemalans to unite against what he termed' a British threat.
