Levin To See Champion Girls' Marching Teams
Preparatiohs are well under way for the pre-North Island marching championships' on the Levin Park Domain on Saturday, March 13. Teams from a wide radius have signified their intention of being present. It is hoped that when entries close tonight they will include the • three placed teams at the recent New Zealand championships ai Dunedin, Police (Hastings), Blair Athol (Dunedin) and D.I.C. (Wanganui) .- There is also every possibility that" Arawa (Nelson), who supplied the champion leader at Dunedin, will be present to compete for the lea'der's award. A handsome cup, donated by Messrs. Hudson and Burnham, Ltd., Levin, for annual competition and a.gold medal, to'- be won outright,. are the awards. ' C A. - r For the championship aggregate, the winning team will hqld the Horowhenua A. and P. Association's Challenge" Cup for 12 months, and medals donated by Mr, Carl Larssn, of Levin, while the leader of the team will receive a gol'd medal donated by Mr., H. B. Wise. The runners-up will receive medals donated by various citizens, a complete list of which appear on the official programme,while their leader will receive a gold medal donated by A. L. Williams Ltd., Levin. The winners of the cohtest march will hold for 12 months the N.Z. Belting Company's Challenge Cup, while the wi'nners of the-cos-tume competition will receive medals. »• ' The coach of the team winning the open competition will receive a gold medal donated by Mr._ J. Barrat of the B.B.C. Grocery. For the Horowhenua competition, which will bq run in conjunction with the open - championship, the local teams will corrfpete for- the Horowhenua A„ and P. Association's Challenge Cup for the championship aggregate and. for tlie Beatty Rose Bowl for the contest march. The champion Horowhenua leader will be awarded the D.J. Convery. Cup, to be held for 12 months. Mr. Peter Ward has donated a gold medal .to be won outright by the_ leader gaining this award. Mr! E! Ward, Levin, has donated medals for the winners of the aggregate, and medals will plso be awarded to the runners-up, while the leader of the winning team "will receive a gold medal donated by the Levin Fibrous Plasterers, and the leader of- the. team .gaining second place will. receive a gold medal donated by. Special Award Emergencies in any b'ranch of sport are generally not ca.tered for as !far as trophies are concerned, althOugh they must be ready at a" moment's not^ce to fill any positipn in a team. Realising this Mr. H-. F. Birley, Levin, has presented to the Horowhenua Marching Association a medal which he specially made to be awarded to the best . emergency among Horowhenua teams. This will be held for twelve months and a miniature will be given to the winner at the end of this period, when the medal comes up again for competition.
