Shark Seen Near Kapiti

Fishermen familiar with the waters around Kapiti lsland expressed some concern for the young swimmers who proposed swimmmg from Kapiti to the mainland recently. That 'their fears were well founded can be testifled to by Mr. W. Donovan, a prominent member of the Waikanae Beach Bowling Club. ,Mr. Donovan was fishing at the northern end, not far from where the party of swimmers left on their long swim, and only three days later, when a large shark came around and started seizing the fish before they could be pulled into the boat. Finally the shark followed a fish as it was' being drawn into the boat and pushed Ra hose right out of the water and along the gunnel. A member of the party plunged a knife into its back Liehind the head. It was last seen swimming away leaving a trail of- blood. Mr. Donovan estimates the length of the shark at about nine feet.
