Work Suspended On Nine Aircraft Carriers

LONDON, Feb. 17.The Admiralty has suspended ronstrurtion on nine aircraft /carriers for the Navy and is expected soon to issue a statement on Ihe future strength of aircraft. carriers similar to the recent statement on the live battleships, says the United Press. Lloyd's shipping gazette lists the suspended carriers as the Uentaur, Albion, Bulwark. Ilennes (all 18.300 tonners) and Majestie, Her cules, Leviathan, Terrible and Povrerful (all 14,000 tonners). The British Xavy now has twelvo compJeted carriers — haif of a fleet category and half of a light fleet tvpe, None of the six iarge tvpe are actually in operational service at present. Ot tlie six light carriers, each -13,000 tonners, only three are operational — Triumph and Ocean in tlie JMediterranean and Vengeance enroute to Britain from the Far East. Two 33,000 ton fleet carriers — Eagle and Ark Roval — are now being built but constru'ction is not being pressed, One new light earrier, the 14,000 tonner Majestic, is destined for the Canadian Navy.
