Fast Drivers are Careful The opinion that where a person was allege'd.to he speeding, or cutting a corner, he or she should be charged with those oHences_ and not the nebulous charge of driving without due care and attention, i was expressed by Mr. A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Timaru. When charges were brought against two men of ' riding motor-cycles without . due care and attention, Mr. McLachlan ' said that driving at an excessive speed was not driving without due care and attention. "The most speedy drivers are often the most careful," he said. Wottian Seriottsly Injured • Serious inj urres to her heaa, right arm ahd shoulder were suffered by a married woman, Edith Fairclough, aged 31, of Centennial Drive, Palmerston North, when the bicycle she was riding wa's involved in a collision with a heavy trubk owned by Messrs. Child Bros. and driven by Mr. Donald George Eustace, at 1.30 p.m. in Albert Street yesterday. The injured woman was removed to hospital by ambulance. At a late hour last night her condition was reported to be serious. Land Set Aside In a Gazeue notice just published notification* is given of the reservation for recreational grounds of an area of two acres between Bath Street and Queenwood Rodd, Levin. This area is a disused gravel pit on the corner of the two roads, and the notice is the outcome of | an application made by the Levin ( Borough Council to the Crown ; Lands Department in 1944 for the j land to he set aside. It wrll eventuj ally be handed over to the counJ cil for use as a recreation area, and it is the intention of the council to deposit rubbish there until the land is sufficiently level for such a purpose. Tasmanian Visit A _ party. of 24 Tasmanians, mostly farmers, arrived at Auckland by flying-boat last week to begin a touf of New Zealand. The ' . party, which is spoTisored by the Tasfnanian Potato Growers' Board, will make a stiidy of various aspects of the. New Zealand agricultural i-ndustry, and their tentatite itinerar.y 'inMudes stops at Palmerston North on February 29 and March 7.- It is expeeted that they will visit Massey Agricultural College and the research stations at Fitzherbert. A second party from Tasmania is due to arrive at Auckland by flying-boat next week. Peren) and representatiVes ;of the Rehabilitation Depar'tmeht at - Palmerston North, and are now settled into their new quarters in the college grounds. For the previous "threb .years such ex-servicemen had to be trahsported to and from the college from their quarters at Linton militafy camp.
