WELLINGTON, EeL>. 17. There was littie room for optimLsm on the question of petroleum supplies during the next couplc of years, said Mr. N. H. Smith, geueral manager of the Shell Company of New Zealand, who has just returned from London hoadquarters of'the Shell group. Altliough there is no shortage of crude petroleum, hc said, relining and distributing facilities are insufficient to allow the industry to cope with the eiLormously expanded demand foi petroleum products. The United Htates alone in 1947 consumed more petroleum than the wliole world, including the United Stales, did in 1938 and heav.v eonversions from coal to oil all over Ihe world have aggravated the'alrcady difficult situation. Kelief hinges on the stoel supply situation and until this improves the oil industry cannot complete its plans for expandmg the relining and shipping capacitv of the industry to cope with the unforseen demand.
