AUCKLAND. Feb. 10. Imposing a sentence uf two montlis-' imprisonment on Arthur Stanley Rogers, aged 59, former land salestuan. for a breach of the Servicemen 's Xe.tl lement and Land Saies Act, involving two ''under the table" pavments of £200 for a liouse and section in Grey Lviiri last April, Alr. J. H. Luxford, S.A1., said the ease not bnly showed a deliberate and flagrant breach of the Act but that it aiso savoured of extortion. He addcd that there were no niitigating cireumstances whatever in the case. Defendant admitted a charge that on April 19 last. being an agenl to the, sale of a property at Grey Lynu when the transaction had been consenled to by the Land Saies Court on Alarch 2i, he indueed Elizabeth Oalherine ITurney to nnike a secret payment of £200 to nimself. ITe also pleaded guilty to a charge of inducing Llizabeth Ilurtiev to make a secret payment of £200 in" respect of the saiue property on February 5, 19L7, this payment not being disclosed and being ineonsistent with an application made under thc Act. The Alagistrate sentenced defendant to two montlis' hard labour on the cliarge of April 18 and eonvicted and diseharged him on the second charge. A certihcate of indemnity from prosecution was granted to Alrs. Hurney.
