Burning Of Rubbish On Streets

^ ^ Speaking at the recent meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, the chairman of the works committee, Cr. L. G. Sayer, stated that he was of the opinion that the practice of allowing residents to burn hedge clippings and other rubbish on the borough streets should cease, as a number of residents did not take the trouble of "fcleaning up after burning with the result that when the mower was put over the streets considerable difficulty was experienced. 'Cr. Sayer went on to state that on a number of occasions pieces of wire netting and other material, which could not be burnt, were placed on the fires with the result that they soon became overgrown with grass and damage was caused to the mower when the grass was being cut. Cr. V. J. Bateman stated that some provision shoul'd be made for those residents who had only small sections and space would not permit them to light fires in a small area without enaangering their property. He was of the opinion th§t as all householders had first to obtain a permit before lighting-any fires within the borough, it could be pointed out when issuing the permit that the area should he cleaned up after the fire. Several members spoke in support of Cr. Bateman and his motion to the effeet that the area be cleaned up after a fire was seconded by Cr. R. S. Downes. Cr. Sayer was not in agreement with this and moved an amendment that residents be not allowed to light fires on the borough streets. The amendment was seconded by the Mayor. When the amendment was placed before the meeting only the Mayor and Cr. Sayer wer,e in support and Crs. Clayton, Batemen, Norris, Downes, Wishart and Aitchison voted against the amendment. Cr. Cronquest drd not vote. • The motion was then put and carried, with the Mayor and Cr. Sayer in opposition.
