Fined For Making False Statement
Charged with. making a false statement to the Registra-r of- Marriages, Kingi McGregor, railway porter, of Opiki, appeared in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday. McGregor had contracted a marriage at Waverley with a girl of 21, said Sergeant W. Grainger for- the police. He had caused the ghl to supply wrong details to the registrar as to her age and his Christian name. Asked by the magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., „whethe-r he chose to go before a jury in the Supreme Court or be dealfe summarily by ..the court, McGregor elected on the. latter course. He had met the girl \yhile engaged in sheep shearing, and after he ha.d married her had taken her home to his. parents- in Opiki, continue'd Sergeant Grainger. McGregor's father had asked to see the marriage certificate, andon noting the incorrect particulars. had advised his son to go to the.police. McGregor had done this. andfreely adinitted the dffence. "He. is a good lad and an industrious worker," commented Sergeant •Grainger. * In reply to a question from Mr. Goulding, McGregor- said that he. earned £8 a week as a porter bn the' Palmerston North Railway Sta-.' tion. He was convicted and fined £5. "This is a very small fine' fp/ Such an offence, and I will allow; you 14 days in which to. pay it," cominentecl Mr. Goulding.
