Visiting Bandsmen Like N.Z. Audiences
"We have had a marvellous time since we landed in Wellington the other day," said Bandmaster H. V. Stevens of the Hawthorn Salvation Army Band which played in Levin yesterday. He thought that the country was "wonderful" and that the audiences to which the band had played were some of the most appreciative he had yet met. Bandsman J. H. Stevens, one of the seven with that surname in the band, has a record in the funh|ng world. In 1947, he won the Australian 880 yards track championship. The band had not come to; Levin to give speeches but to iet the people hear som^tM ifsi$hbsic, commented Brigadief Goffin. However, ihe wished to extend his thanks to the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin for his welcome which *was very much appreciated. Mr. Burdekin, in extending his official welcome to the band, commented on the fact that during the short period allowed it, the band should find time to make a stop at Levin. This was deeply appreciated by the residents of Levin. At the conelusion of the recital, Brigadier Goffin extended .his thanks to the Mayor for his work in arranging the recital, and to the police and traffic inspector for their eo-operation. He also thanked the bandmaster of the Levin Municipal Band, Mr. G. Lester fdr arranging the forms.
