Routine Matters Discussed By Council

1 i . ' The • usual fortnightly meeoingi of the Shannon Borough Councii was held on Tuesday night, the Mayoi, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presiding cver Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, C M. Cronquest, L. G. S'ayer, C. G. Wishart and H. Aitchison. Among the correspondence was a letter from the Main Highways i Board in connection with the aeal1 ing of Grey Street. In replying to {the council's letter for an addi- • tional loan of £93 to carry out the work as approved in the revised estimate, the board asked if this I amount could not be paid out of revenue. If not, it would be neces'sary to submit the application to jthe board for consideration. The j council resolved to ask the board to (grant the additional amount asked | for, as it will not he possihle for { the council to meet the amount out ■ of revenue. : Application was ma'de by the ! Shannon sub-centre of the Plunket Society for permission to hold a street stall on March 12. The town clerk pointed out that the society" make only one appeal for fiircis during the year. The request was granted. / ( The secretary of the Ho? jv-henua Rugby Union wrote making application for the use of ihe domain ; during' the coming f ootball season on the same terms as previous

seasons, namely ten per cent. if the gross gate takings. On the motion of Cr. Bateman the application was granted. A Mangaore resident offered, for an annual fee of £15, to iook after the- water supply intake at Mangaore, keep flushed out the' sumo at the reservoir site and see

that the reservoir is kept filled. It was pointed out that if this person was .engaged it would relieve the borough employee from having oO make several trips to Mangaore and consequently could spend more time in connection with his -other duties in the borough. On the motion of Cr. Clayton, the offer was accepted to commence from March 1 of this year. Cr. V. J. Bateman, chairman of the building committee, reported that he had earried out inspections of works for which buirdmg perirhits were before the council and I'they were satisfactory. Permits i were then granted to Mr. H. C. Foot 'for the erection of an additional bddroom, Mr. H. Beatson for repairs to his gara'ge premises in Ballance Street and to Messrs. Sayer Bros: for the erection - of a dweliling.' ' : I Cr. Bateman, als^- -reported that Itwo tenders had been received for I the painting of the municipal ! buildings. The tender of Mr. A. ■Thomson, for labour only, was | accepted. The towri clerk Was j directed to purchase paint and other materials necessary for the ; carrying out of the work. | Cr. H. L. Norris, chairman of the I library committee-, reported that ! his committee had met and j recommended that the council transfer £50 from the general I account to the library account. |Following a discussion, an amendment was moved by Cr. H. Aitchison and seconded'by Cr. B. ClayI ton "That the grant be not made in the meantime." Those who voted for the amendment were Crs. ClayI ton, Bateman, Downes, Wishart and Aitchison. Against the amendment, Crs. Norris, Cronquest, Sayer and the Mayor. The amendment j was earried and became the motion which was also earried. I Cr. L. G. Sayer, chairman of the | works committee, reported that I the grader had been working on the jsides of the sealed streets and the , earth and grass would be removed. A new lawnmower has been purchased and quotes for testing the soakage at the State houses at Margaret Street have been forwarded to the Housing Department for their approval. Cr. Sayer also suggested that a Palmerston North firm be asked to give a demonstration in the borough of a machine suitable for borough work. The matter of eipploying extra labour for cutting the beautifying area was left over until the spring. Cr.- Bateman stated that he had received quotes for a hot water system but it was agreed that local prices he obtained. The matter was left in the hands of the building committee with power to act. Cr. B. Clayton reported that he had attended a meeting of the domain • improvement committee. The financial position was considered and the committee have decided to conduct a street day to raise funds urgently required to carry out improvement work on the domain grounds. • Crs. R. s. Downes and C. G. Wishart, reported on the annual meeting of the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade and the interest the members were taking in brigade matters. ■ On the motion of Cr. Norris, accounts to the amount of £86 4s 3d were passed for payment.
