Early Mushrooms Fetch High Price At Market
Messrs. Townsend and Pa-il, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the past week supplies of all varieties of fruit have continued to come to hand freely with values taking rather a wide range. • This has been more noticeable in the sale of peaches and plums, a few varieties of both lines realising ceiling price, while the gr.eater majority have been sold under the hammer at very mueh reduced figures. Fruits in keenest demand are apricots, greengages, grapes and black currants. Cape g'ooseberries made their first showlng this week and met with a great demand, values being accordihgly high. Mdshrooms have been realising up to 3/6 per pound. Tomatoes during the earlier part of the week were at glut prices; however, an easing in supplies has caused a noticeable rise in values. Vegetables are in short supply with values for mos't lines being very attractive, a strong demand existing for choice lettuces, green peas, eabbag'es, and cauliflowers, while carrdts and pumpkins are slow to quit. In the flowers all varieties are being offered with values firm. "Large yardings of poultry have been offered with keen competition being noted for. prime birds.
