WANGANUI," Feb. 11. Forty members of the R.N.Z.A.F. recruited in Britain will .begin training at Ohakea at the end of this week un'der a scheme which will eventually cover about 300. The "imported" airmen are the first of the recruits who began arriving on the station in December and the intake is expected to continue for some time. The men, all of whom are ground staff, range in age from 18 to 25 and some saw war service with the R.A.F. "A certain number of the air oersonnel were recruited in the United Kingdom," said the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, in a telephone interview. "They will be j used to strengthen certain . trades mch as mechanics, .and fitters in which there will presently be a shortage. They have been engagJ ed for periods varying from four to eight years, depen'ding on their qualifications and all will undergo a general refresher course at Shelley Bay for a week." , ' Although no definite inf ormation is available, it is linclerstood that an extension of the schem,s to the' Army has not been conteinplated.
