HAMILTON, Feb. 10. A iifth wiclcet partnersliip of 75 between McMahon and Petrie saved Waikato from threatened collapse in the lirst inuings against Fiji at Seddon Park, Hamilton. McMahon batfed with tvpical briliiance and was always aggressive and lodking for runs. When compiling 73 in 86 minutes, he hit tliree sixes aud nine fours. Petrie, a very promising young wicketkeeper, batted soundly for 27. Waikato tail failed to wag and the side was all out sliortly after 3 p.m. Viliame kept the batsmen quiet with his off breaks wliich b rough t him five for 64 in 2.5)' overs. Isoa was always steady, never reallv expensive and tinished with a great burst to take tho last four wickets, three clean bowled and one l.b.w. Fiji scored 127 for two wickets, a featui'e of the innings being a stylish imbeaten 64 by the lefthander Apted who used his fee^t beautifully and seoreo with well executed shots.
