With India lighting griiniy for runs and to tavoid a follow on, -Br'adman, fielding again after his strain, eoncentrated on .thoroughly testing the three new bowlers on trial. Ring, the Vietorian spinner, • bowled unclianged during morning play ahd Len Johnson, Queensland, and Loxton, Yictoria, both fast mediunis, did most of the work a' the other end. Ring Was the most impressive, showiug good control, varying the fliglit cleverly but concentrat-. ing generally on bowling well outside the off stump to a strong off field. Loxton took most of the wickets, Tallon catching two leg-side snicks. Mankad completed his second test eentury by stolid, watchful batting, scoring 111 in 300 minutes including six fnurs. He took 51 minutes going from 90 to 100. Hazare's was easily the best innings, showing Melbourne the form shown at the Adelaide test when he made a eentury in each innings. He was baek eutting prettily and his driving was well timed and powerful. He made 72 not out in 166 minutes, hitting seveu fours. The Indians still need;121 to avoid a follow on. There was a successful light appeal at 5.39 p.m. The attendance wa's 19,674 and the takings £1895.
