WELLINGTON* Feb. 4. A proposal from, the. New Zealand Baking Trades Employees; Union for the provision of a Rve-day week under the baking .trades erhployees award, occupied the greater part of the day at the opening of the Conciliation Council sitting today. , Workers' represeiitatives argued that a five-day. week. had '■ in faet .-been operating since January 1946 in tlie baking industry, in .prgictic-aily ail centres and that it was time it was written mto the award. . The employers opposed the workers' elaim. The workers also asked for a wkgo inerease of £1 Os 7d. This would bring journeymen bakers' wages to £8 8s 7d a week, foremen bakers' wages to £8 19s ;ld, and labourers to -£7 Ss 7d. The Couneil adjourned until tomorrow.
