Invercargill Grocers Not Wrapping Bread
INVERCARGILL, Feb. 4. Until they receive reimbursement for the eost of wrapping paper, some grocers in Invercargill are. refusiug to couiply witli* the regulations introducfld on Jaiiuary 1, that all bread sold over the counter must be wrapped. The general feeling is that grocers cannot alford to wrap' b'read on tlie present prolit mar-gin and that for the nieasure to be "fully effective, .bread shoulds be wrapped at the bakehouse,. " Pointing out that the regulations stated bread had to be wrapped at the bakehouse and yet because of maehinery and paper sliortages, the onus was being placed on the grocer, oue grocer said if the government made r'egulations it should be prepared to earry out tlie regulations. It was -to some extent the Government's responsibility to inake the necessary machinery available in the bakehouse. The grocerS, ho said, wero fully. aware of the difficultie;s faced by the bakers iu the inatter ot bread wrapping. v To add to the other difficulties, cap paper — the main paper used* in the wrapping of bread — was not unobtainable from the manufacturers, said another grocer. ' In such cases as bus orders and rural deliveries, bread wrapping is computsory and we have to use , kraft paper." Not only is this paper dearer but there are also f ew'er • sheets to th,e pound weight. Kraft paper is £11 a ton dearer than cap paper.".
