Mr. Fraser's Side Of Rongotai Issue

WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. "No good purpose would be served by entering into a eontroversy in regard to proposals for the future development of Rongotai airfield, with his Worship the Mayor or an^body else, ' ' said the Prime Minister, Mr. . Fraser, today when commenting on tlie • discussion at yesterday's meeting of the finance committee bf the Wellington Gity Council regarding the airport. Mr. Fraser said he eould not agree that the qiiestiori of removing a large number of families from their home was just as bogey. It was a very seri-ous matter for the families concerned. Then the removal and rep-lacing .of Rongotai College and a total Government expenditure of anything from £1,500,000 to £2,000,000 was involved. >As regards the- delay in connectionwith earlier plans and rec'ommendatioits which did n'ot reeeive the Government's) approval, Mr. Fraser said he thought the delay had been most profltab^, particularly in getting a better all round sense of proport.ion to 'bear on the pos* sibilities and diffieulties of the problem of . transforming Rongotai inta a safe and adequate national airfield". "* He : willingly acc'epted his full share^of the responsibility for that delay which he believed' would definitely prove * advantageous to all concerned. .
