Communists Elected With Bigger Majorities
= Received Tuesday," 7 p.m". LONDON, Feb. 3. Communists have been reelected to the general exeeutive council of the Transport and General Workers' Union — Brilaiu's biggest anion — with record majorities in the record .polls, states.the Dailv Worker. Bill Jones increased his poi! by 8000 votes more than in 1946. A.-F. Papworth, who is also ameniber of the general council oi" T.U.C., polled 5000 more}than he did two years ago. Olaiming that this is the rank and lile's reply to the "Communist witch nunt in the unions", the Daily Worker adds: "The importance of this resounding defeat for antidemocratic moves made by Right wing leaders of the Labour movement, will be reflected not only in the nnion but' also in the trade union movement as a wbole. " The .r'esult, too/ is of extreme inter national signilicance because it is well knovvn that members of the Govenrinentj notably M.r.' Bevin and Mr. Morrison give fult support to the anti Couununist driv'e in the unions. It is also the latest expressiomof the gruwing militancy in the Transport- and General Workers' Union. .
