Rumanian Trial Subject Of British Protest
Received Wednesday, 10.10 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 3. Britain has sent a long note to Rumania protesting against the infringement of the Human Rights clause in the Rumanian Peace Treaty, implied in fhe recent prison sentences on Dr. Maniu and other leaders of the National Peasant Party. Dr. Maniu' was sentenced on November 11 to solitary confinement.for life and his leading supporters to long gaol sentences on charges of high treason and fcmenting foreign interference in Rumania. The British view is that the charges of high treason were never proved, .the- trials had a highly political* character with the main purpose of eliminating nonCommunist opposition, and they were a breach of Article Three of the Rumanian Peace Treaty, guaranteeing political liberties, including freedom of political •opinion and public meetings.
