Veterans Feature In Novel Cricket Match

A novel cricket matcli was played on the domain last Sunday when a team representing the "oldtime" cricketers defeated the local cricket club's match eleven by a narrow margin. Before the .war, this match between past and present .cricketers •was an annual fixture, although this is the first fixture of its kind played since the club came out of -recess in 1945. A feature of the match, which was played over two irinings each, was the number of "sixers" hit during the day, both by the old-timers and the present players. The present players 'went to the wicket first and were all out with a score of 121. V. Picard 30, H. Moore 23, Woodswarth and Tippler 15 each, were the principal batsmen. K. Batt and F. Bradey topped bowling honours with three wickets each. Faced with the problem of scoring over a hundred runs, the old-timers went to the wicket full of determination and somewhat optimistic. With 102 on the board for four wickets, they had the boys worried. When the sixth wicket fell the old-timers had passed the present players' total and were all out for the excellent score of 139. Tippler and Moore with four wickets each and Picard with two were those responsible for dismissing the old-timers. T. Newton 45, K. Thomson 24, C. Mortimer 22 and H. Pope 21, were the top batsmen.' In the present players return to the wicket they knocked up a total of 117. A. Burke 31 retired, G. Nepia 28 retired and V. Picard 25, were the best batsmen, while K. Thomson who took two wickets, was the best bowler for the innings. In the final innings of the- day, the old-timers returned a score of 105 which gave them a lead'of six runs to win the match. H. Pope 29, Robinson 18 and Pigott 11 were the top batsmen and Harris with four wickets and Moore and Tippler with two each, were the best bowler s.
