Report on British Carpet Industry
LONDON, Jan. 30. Tlie report of the working party set. up in 1946 to investigate the posftion of tlie British carpet manufaeturing iudustry says that present shortages of carpets will continue for another five ' years. It points out tliat production in " 1946 was less than lialf pre-war Jigures and that, even allowing- foT increasing production, tlie very large domestic shortage of floor coverings Cannot be overtaken in less than that time. The comiuittee reported that -a. siirvey showed tliat fewer than oue in three working class homes in Britain possess a single carpet and- that two homes in every three possessing carpet require replacements. 'The committee said that a larger proportion of lower priced carpets should be made to cater for the small income groups. The chief difficultv of the industry, states the report, is the. shortage' of female labour, but there is also considerable room for improvement in 'the • lavout of factories and in the standard of equipment employed.
