CUSTOMS UNION TO SAVE FRANC AND POUND

Received Thursday, 9.40 p.m, LO'NDON, Jan. 22. An einergency meeting of tne French Inner Cabinet was held last night following the arrival of Sir Edmund: Hall Patch, tead of the British Foreign Office 's economic and financial department, who, according to the Financial Times' Paris correspondent, brought with him the British Governmeut's objections to any French devaluation plan which would undermine the world position of the pound sterling. The correspohdent adds that no statement was issued after the meeting but it was unofficially reported Sir Edmund, on behalf of the Britisn Government, had offered France an alternative, nameiy, a farreachiug customs union which would merge the sterling and franc areas and save the franc without endangering ' the pound. Sir Edmund will return to London today.
