The total issues for the month Were fiction 6453, non- 1 fiction 318 and juniors 355, a total 1 of 7303. - , Early Mushrooms Mushrooms, a seasonal delicacy relished by many, have been a wel- , come addition to the breakfast • menu in some homes. A Hamil- ] ton motorist travelling in the King Country discovered a large patch I of attractive mushrooms in a hillside field between Te Kuiti and J Taumarunui and soon . had a gen- j erous basket of them to take home. 1 The weekend rain,, following the previous hot cpnditibns, has result- 1 ed in thb-=g^$t|l$(qf -mushvcoms hij a number of afeas. >- Waikato Butter Quality Not only has dairy production been maintained at rec u'd levels in the province in.recent rnonths, but the quality of butter produced in some areas is stated lo be exceptionally high. A South Auckland dairying authority says that both production and quality arose from the favourable season. Owing to the long spells of fine weather, ' clover had not grown as proiifical'ly i'n various parts of the Waikato as in other seasons. As a. result some dairy factories had received much finer .grades of cream and i:.ad been able to manufacture butter of a standard which had not been equalled in any previous season. Nearly Fell into Well1 0When the ground on which she was stan'ding at the back of her home collapsed, a woman nearly fell into a hidden well 56 feet d^ep containing 36 feet of water. She was Mrs. Muriel Hoyes, of Takutai Street, Parnell. She was coiling a hose when the ground gave way under one of her feet and she sank up to one 'thigh but did not fall into th well because most of her weight was on the other foot. Although the same family has lived in the house for 40 years, the presence of the well was unsuspected. It is four feet across and stoutly bricked. The top had been planked and concreted over. Pleading guilty to being drunk while in charge of a motor vehicle, Herbert Alexander Ritchie, contractor, aged 32, was fined £15 and his driver's license was cancelled for 12 months- when he appeared before Mr. J. R. Herd, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North yesterday. Senior Sergeant R. Audley,. who prosecuted, stated that acciiSed had been apprehended near Ashhurst on January 19 when the erratic manner of his driving had attracted atteiition.
