Visitor From British Uganda In Shannon
With the object of investigating the latest methods of bottling and treating milk, Mr. J. D. Chater, the general.manager of the Kenya Cooperative Creameries Ltd., British Uganda, is visiting New Zealand and Australia. The company are considering the establishment of a milk treating plant for the municipality of Nairobi. Visiting the Shannon, factory recently, Mr. Chater renewed a ten-year-old friendship with the secretary, Mr. C. M. Cronquest. During an interview, Mr. Chater said that the Kenya Co-operative Creameries last year manufactured 3000 tons of butter. During the year 173282, lbs. of butter was supplied to ships stores and "food for Britain"' received 39200 lbs., making the total exported almost three million pounds of butter. The company has 1200 European suppliers who produce over 6,000,000 lbs. of butter per year. The pastures, farms and residences are situated at an altitude of over 6000 ft., and although almost on the Equator, they jsuffer little effect from heat. The climate much resembles the Hawke's Bay district of this country. Mr. Chater leaves New Zealand in February, flying back via Australia, India and Cairo. Prior to leaving Shannon, Mr. Chater left his company's balance sheet which makes very interesting readin%, and Mr. Cronquest extends a cordial invitation to anyone interested to call at his office at the local dairy company and examine it.
