MELBOURNE SWELTERS WITH THERMOMETER 101.5
Received Monday, 11.15 p.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 19. With a temperature of 101.5 at 4 p.m., Melbourne hatf, the hottest day this summer. It was the first occasion on which the thermometer had passed the 100 mark. Early this evening a number of bush fires was reported burning m various parts of the State which is heing swept by a strong hot nortn wlrid. Grass fires are also reported in many parts of the- suburbs. An unidentified man was burned to death in one suburban^fire in circumstances not yet explained. It is thought he was the caretaker of St. Kevin's school oval at Kooyong and was engaged burning off long grass when the wind swept the fire back on him. So far no damage is reported from the country bushfires but brigades are busy at all the danger spots. A change of wind is expected to bring a drop in the temperature later tonight and avert further fire danger.
