PARK OR PARKING AREA?

Opinion Divided Over Grass Triangle When the question of the uitimate use to which the trianguiar area of grass in Cambridge Street could be put. was. raised at last iiight's • meeting ' of the' Levin Borough Council, opinion was divided. Some of the councillors believed that it should be utilised as a parking area for cars, while others took the view that Levin was well catered for in this regard and that the' beautification of the area by the planting of shrubs and plants was more desirable. Introducing the subject, the subject, the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said he was pleased to note that the grass seed sown on the area had resulted in a fine lawn, and the time was: ripe for further beautification of the section. He suggested that a hedge be planted along the railway boundary, which, if kept to the height required by the Railways Department regulations. and neatly trimmed, would make for considerable improvement.

Though the suggestion he was about . to make would . probably be regarded as "gross sacrilege" by hor.ticulturalists, he persorially would prefer the area converfced to a parking area forf cars, said Cr, D. J, Sweetzer. Mr. Burdekin: Over my dead body. I think w.e have made plenty of space available in Queen Street and other areas for car parking. . Concurring with Cr. Sweetzer's suggestion, Cr. W. Telford said he had always been of the opinion that, the area should be set aside for parking, Mr. Burdekin: I thjnk this could be left to the works" committee to go fully into, and as you are a member of the committee, Cr. Telford, you can argue it out with them. Cr. A. J. H. Allen: I hold the same view as Crs. Sweetzer and Telford. The area could be made a beautif.ul parking spot. It is very handy to town and would save people carrying" parcels long distances. It was left to the works committee to discuss the future of the area fully.
