Still Busy on Rimutaka Tunnel Project
S MASTERTON, Jan. 19. "We are still busy on the surveying of trial routes with a view to establishing the best grade for the Rimutaka Tunnel," said Mr. W. F. Young, resident engineer of the Public Works Department at Trentham, in an interview by telephone today. Regarding the Rimutaka Tunnel project, Mr. Young said they had surveyed over a dozen different routes, and these had been narrowed down to about three at the western end, the location of the e'astern portal of the tunnel having already been fixed. At the eastern end the whole of the approach area had been widened, and the location of the tramlines, mixing plant and sheds sited there. The layout had made some advance. The matter of accumulating plant was well in hand. They had r|p dollars, and the department was trying to get the equipment required from England, which country, however, could not supp'ly it readily. The layout all depended on the amount of machinery and the detennination of the compassion available. The project is not being baulked in any .way.
