The friends of Miss H. E. Bowen, of Queen Street East, Levin, will regret to learn that she is at present seriously ill. The New Zealand Minister (Sir Carl Berendsen) is on hi's way to New Zealand for eonsultations with the Government4 in Wellington. .The death occurred at Inverargill 'of Mr. John William Smith, a prominent business man and the fouhder of the firm of Messrs. H. and J. Smith, drapers. He was ^ prominent angler and a supporter of many pastimes and Southland activities. He leaves a wife and a grown up family. An examination of the work being done in New Zealand by the Public Works Department, will be made by Mr. R. C. Sharp, chief engineer of the Public Works Department of Ta'smania, who arrived at Auckland by flying boat. Mr. Sharp said he hoped his visit. would 'be the first of a number -of ..exchanges between the Dominion and Tasmania. They had many similar problems. He would be in New Zealand about three weeks.
