WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. Undesirable books give the Customs Department in New Zealand little trouble. This was stated by the Controller of Customs, Mr. D. G. Sawers. He was eommenting on a Sydney inessage which stated that about 100 books, eonie of which had been on the banned list for 40 years, bad now been removed from the list: Mr. Sawers said a safeguard was provided in this country by a elause in all import licences. In the ease of imports from foreign eountries, this stated that no periodicals or maga- i zines, exeeiy; approved publications and no subversive publication or publica- 1 tions which gave prominence to sex, ob- 1 scenity, horror, terror, cruelty or crime, I would be admitted under licence. | Licences for impoi'ts from other than | foreign eountries eontained a similar provision e.xcept that the reference to periodicals or magazines was omitted. r'The booksellers cooperate fully in the matter, ' ' Miy Sawers adde.d, ' ' and- they are the best judges.
