BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION
MONTHLY MEETING OF OTAKI COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday night. Present were the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmorq, and Crs. E. Cook, H. W. Hakaraia, J. L. Retter and N. D. Anderson. Apologies were received from Crs. E. T. Bartosh and G. McKinley. Stating that the hose in the dressing room of the Otaki Beach pavilion was more a nuisance than a convenience, the lessee asked the council to disconnect the tap-. The repairs to the broken windows had not been earried out, ~ it was stated. Councillors decided to make another request for the- replacements to be made. The spouting on the pavilion roof will be given the necessary attention. The matter was left to the works committee to carry out. The extraordinary water supply was discussed, several applications i for connections being favourably eonsidered. However, it was stated that connections could not be made without the consent of the j council. Trouble had occurred with the supply to the houses at Rahui and the council had requested the attendance of one of the householders concerned at the next monthly meeting. He would be asked to explain- his attitude in connection with the supply to his ,home. Rangiuru »£ream Matters Approval was received from the Manawatu . Catchment Board to the financial arrangements for the sluice gates in the RangiuruStream, proposed by the council at a recent meeting. The work' will consist of a bank across the lower ■end of the stream, joining the road used by the tower dredge to the beach road. A sluice gate will be, constructed through the bank to drain the Rangiuru Stream and I, another small stream just- north of i the Otaki River. I It will be necessary to construct *;a stopbank on Mr. Tew's property ;to pr event the water from the j Waitohi! River overflowing and 1 overloading the sluice gate. This , will prevent the stream from backl'ing up at high tide and flooding the area •surrounding it. The level will-* be lowered to about half the I riormal depth, giving much im1 proved. dr-ainage. The Waitohu Stream will b,e kept ih its own domain by the stopbank on Mr. Tew's property. The flooding of this river will be stopped by the clearing of- the willows along the banks. The whole of this area will receive great • benefit from the proposed scheme. The bridge on Beach Road will* be lessened in area as it will have much less width of river to cross. The council discussed the ' re"placement of the Rangiuru Bridge, £500 being eonsidered as an estimate of the cost. The present structure was dangeroits, and one .councillor maintained that a tem;--porary bridge should be erected. Many business people would regret the closing of the bridge to vehicular.trafflc, as this would prevent them from making ■ the round trip. It was decided that notices sliould _be erected at each end of the bridge, stating that it was unsafev. White rails and posts could also be erected, while the bridge could be ljt at night. The matter was referred to the works committee with power to act. .
