BUREAUCRACY BUSTLES WHEN BABY YELLS
Eeceived Thursdav, 7 p.m. LOXiioX, Jan. 15. The Mnustry of Labour has just pnned that bureaucracy has its huitian side. Wheri two Ukrainian displaced persons, Mr. and Mrs. Zatchij, were brought to Britain bv tlie -Ministrv to work in a textile mill iu Wiltshire', arnved a t'ew months ago and Mrs. Zatchij announced she expeeted a baby in January, the Ministrv was at a loss for the camp where they we.re established had no facilities for dealing witn infants. However, the -Ministrv accepted full responsibility for tiie mothe-r 's welt'are, booked her a place in a nursing home, bought her a perambulatpr, a cot and evervthing necessary for an infant, and even found a Ministrv Tffidal to act as goclf'ather. Commend'ing tlie Ministrv 's handling of this situation for which no precedents exist in tlie civil servi&v files, the Xews-Chronicle says: "Behjnd the Almistry's stoical exterior it often betrays an attractive desire to be loved. To . require a godfather is the crowning glorv. He will pass triumphaixtly into tradftion. And well he mav. Eor could there be a happier relationship than his between civil servant and the citizen — a benevolent intercst in welfare without too much authority ? " ' '
