WOMAN ALMOST HIT BY BALL OF FIRE
-V — : DUNEDIN, Jan. 14. At the height of a sharp electrical storm, which. was experienced in Dunedin yesterday afternoon, a ball of fire fell in the yaril of a house in London Street, narrowjy uii.ssing the occupant, Mrs. P. Casseriey, as she was carrying in a supply of coal. The storln, which was preceded by numerous flashes of lightning and prolojiged rolls of thunder, brought excep tionally heavy rain for upwards of Two hours. With the ball of flre eaine a deafenirig bang which rattled the windows in neighbouring liouses. Mrs. Casseriey had gone into the washhouse to get the coal. She crossed to the back door a fevv feet awav and on turning to ciose the door she was startled by a vivid red ball. As 'it hit the concrete flames broke out, but quiekly died away. No damage resulted. The phenomeuon is thought to have been a ball of lightning' which is a com paratjvely rare occurrence. While not aliecting anythiug it does not directlv touch, it may act as an explosive on any solid body eoming vvithin its path, and instances have been recorded of walls being demolished and holes some feet deep being made in ihe ground.
