WATERSIDERS DISMISSED FOR KNOCKING OFF EARLY

WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. Between 100 and 1.20 watersiders were dismissed' from their jobs on over seas sliips in Wellington today on the ground that they left work before nnisinng time. The dism^ssals involve l three ships, the.Enipire Star, GlenparK and Ottawa Valley. The Wellington branch of the Water side Workers' Union will eonsider tomorrow what action it will take. H tlie ships' are declared black then neitlier union nor non-union labour wili be available and their sailing will De indelinitelv delayed. Action was taken by the employers late this afternoon. Between 40 and 5(men on the Glenpark working-at Aotea Quav, were reported to have lext their jobs'at 4.30 p.m., ten minutes before the correct linishing time. A similar breach was alleged against gangs on the Empire Htar totalling between -60 and 70 men, and against one gang working on the Ottawa 'Valley of between 10 and 12 men. A det'-ision was reached late last year bv the Port Committee on the restric tio 11 of spelling on the waterfront to the half -hour smoko periods morning and afternoon. Union officials arC stated to have favoured the elimination of the abuses of spelling. Bince then, just bet'ore and since the holidays, the employers have issued warnings that if these abuses continued the - men -.would be difim.issed from taen jobs .and stood down in 'terms of the Port Committee 's decision.
