SEASON'S FIRST LAMB FAIR

VALUES EXCEED EXPECTATIONE OF VENDORS The first lamb fair of the season' was held in Levin yesterday ii. conjunction with the weekly stocl sale. In spite of the recen drought, values were in excess oi vendors' expeetatiOns. Severa-well-known- annual drafts came forward. They were in exceptionally good condition and brought keen competitiOn from stock fat- ! teners, tlie bulk Of the entry of , 3000 lambs Jfeing absorbed locally. ; There was an overflow yarding oi ' pigs. Every pen in the pig section iwas filled and half a row "of the ! sheep pens, while .they were alsc sold in- trucks, trailers and carts This was mainly due to the decline in milk production brought about j by the dry spell. All pigs in prime ipondition were sold to butchers at j lates on a par with the high levels ' ruling recently. j The- entry of fat sheep was equal to that at last week's sale . and ! realisations for prime wethers and Ihoggets were fully maintained. Fat j ewes werg not in demand and sold ibelow schedule rates. Fat lamhs Iwere 'penned in' smaller numbers Ihnd sold readily at prices up to 40s !iod. The yarding of store cattle was jfsmall. Mainly due to the ahsence J of works coinpetition for ho'ners i and ex-dairy stock, values receded i by from 5s to 10s per head.
