NEW ZEALAND BRIDE FOUND VERMONT "COLD"
BOSTON, Jan. 9. A blonde, attractive New Zealand war bride, Mrs. Aileen Lewis, is en route home today via Pari-American World Airways,. leaving her G.I. husband behind. in Vermont, where, she said, the,residences "are as cold as the snow they live in. " The .comely bride said: "New Zealand is.a heautiful .place. The people there are.as wann as the New Zealand weather and 1 hope to be there early next week." Mrs. Lewis, the wife of Mr, Benjamin Lewis, of Woodstock, Vermont, had no criticism of her husband, but scored Vermont ers generally at zero. She related that she went to Vermont in Jtily, 194(5, "determined to like it. At iirs't they were friendly to me, but after they got over the noveltv of the wav 1 talked they passed me by." She liked the scenery in Vermont and also found the native*'maple svrup "delicious" if poured on snow, but she considered the prices of some foods fantastic, such a butter. at 87 cents a pound, compared with 18 cents in New Zealand, "Of course," shd added, "a lot of my trouble might have been me. J want to make that clear. I was homesiek. My husband knows what homei sickness 'is; he fought for a long time in the Paeific." A Vermont official, commenting on the case, said: "The average Yermonter tries to be friendly to strangers, bu| if that friendliness is not returned the Yermonter can be cold." • He diagnosed the girl's unhappiness as "pure and -simple homesickness. "
