WESTPORT, Jan. 7. "When the Under-Secretary of Mines (Mr. C. H. B.enney) statcs that the open-cast c'oal mined at Stockton in tlie Builer district has a liigh sulphur content he is making a statement which is contrary to fact, ' ' said a competent tnining "authority today commenting on Mr. Benney's statement issued yester. day. "No mention is made by Mr. Benney of tlie highclass bituminous coals in the Waingangaroa or Denniston basin whic.h are known froin analysis to have a low sulphur coutent. Mr. Benuey is no doubi aware that the sulphur coutent varies considerably over large lields such as we liave in the Builer, and that it can lonly be detormined by a coinprehensive analysis. This important work of analysis has not been carried out in the Builer lields for years eitlier by the
