FIRE IN FLAX MENACES NEARBY HOUSES

Threatening dwellings in the near vicinity, fire broke out in the flax at Rangiuru yesterday afternoon. The fire engine was quickly on- the scene, but brigadesmen found that the flow of water was insufhcient to reach the outbreak. The hose was uncoupled and taken to a creek, where heavier pressure and a better supply was available. A bach belonging to Mr. Martin was seriously threatened at one stage and also Mr. Pack's house, which was only a few yards from the blaze. Precautions were taken by other nearby residents, who used hoses to safeguard their property. The brigade is to be commended on its good work, particularly in view of the inadequacy of the water supply in the area.
