N.Z. MEMORIAL IN GREECE SUGGESTED
"The gallantry of the Spartans at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. and the heroism of the New Zealand troops defending the same pass in 1941 are to be perpetuated in a single monument, 10 times life size, which the G-reek Government plans to ereet in the^pass. The actual figure is King Leonidas of the Spartans. He is flahked by two New Zealand soldiers, one a Maori, the other a pakeha." The foregoing report, which appeared in a London newspapcr, is morc positive than the facts warrant., Such a memorial has been snggested, b',ut the External Affairs Department says that memorials to commemorate the battle exploits of British forces are being considered bv a spccial committee (interServicc) in Britain, and no official policy has yet been decided upon among the Governments concerned. - Apparently the proposal, at the moment, is just one among many.
