Misses F. Chester, M. Haley and L. Lee left yesterday afternoon to spend a holiday in the Nelson dis-; trict. After an absence from Shannon of 22 years, Mr. and' Mrs. S. W. Carter's eldest 'daughter, Lillian (Mrs. A. S. Freeman, of Belle Vue, Sydney), accompanied by their grown-up son Neville, and daughter Ngaire, arrived home on a holiday visit, when the occasion was marked by a Christmas gathering of the family at the Ballance Street home of Mr. and Mrs. Carter. Card Party Winners A further card 'evening in the weekly series now being conducted by the Poutu Pah Improvement Committee was -held in Laurvig's Hall on Monday evening. There was a goo'd gathering of players present. The prize-winners were Mrs. W. Radford and Mr. V. J. Bateman. A diversion from cards was caused by the fusing of the lights early in the evening. However, aid was forthcoming and the tournament continued after being delayed for almost. half an hour. Dance Cancelled Owing to the infantile paralysis outbreak, the anfiual dance usually conducted by the Anglican Church La'dies' Guild on New Year's Eve "has been cancelled. This is unfortunate, as the function was the usual means bf the young folk of the town heralding in the New Year.
