THAILAND DEATH RAILWAY AND TOJO'S EXCUSE
Received Tuesdav, 8.35 p:m. TOKID, Dec. 3U. Tojo told the International Militaxw Tribunal for the Far East that many Japanese soldiers were- emploved side by side and treated equally with war prisoners of stronger nationalitieS oh the eonstruction of the ThailaridBurma railwa,y. The objeet of the railway was to expedite supplies to the Japanese forces in Burma and facilitate commerce communications between the two countries. He agre'ed tb the employment of war prisoners £ as the railway route lay at a great distance behind the front liiieS and it was quite apparent the eonstruction work of this railway could not be coitstrued as being coniined within the class of military operations prohibited to war prisoner labour by The -Hagite and Geneva treaties. When he learnt m May, 1943 of the deticiencies in sailitary conditions and the treatment of prisoners engaged on the work, he despatched the chief of the war prisoners ' control section and a number of expert surgeons to the area.
